Public outreach
In addition to disseminating research to an academic audience, I try to make my work more relatable to the general public, and to children.
- In 2020, I joined Breakfast with Bjarne, a radio talk show put on by KTUH at the University of Hawai'i, about a project on gender bias in academia
- In 2019, I gave an interview on repeat photography in the Canadian Rockies/the Mountain Legacy Project with Radio Canada (in French)
- In 2018, I participated in the University of Victoria's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition
- In 2018, I published a Written Three Minute Thesis (W3MT) entry with eParliament
- In 2018, I submitted a video to the University of Victoria's Research Reels contest (below)
- For International Mountain Day 2018, I was interviewed by Radio Canada about the Mountain Legacy Project (in French)
- In 2016, I appeared as a "forest expert" on the TVOKids TV show "Finding Stuff Out"
I created a video montage about the Mountain Legacy Project as part of UVic's Research Reels contest in 2018. This video won third place in the People's Choice Award.

I was a finalist in UVic's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. I won first place in my Faculty. (Unfortunately the video link is broken!)

Placing oblique photos on the map
November 20, 2018 The Mountain Legacy Project often uses the term “oblique photo” to describe the images we deal with, but what exactly does “oblique photo” mean? |
What's up with the piles of rocks on mountaintops?
June 11, 2018 As the Oblique Photography team prepares to head out into the field, they are training new field staff how to find the locations where land surveyors once stood to photograph the landscape. Sometimes it’s a bit more complicated (see our last blog post!), but sometimes there is a nice, friendly marker left behind by surveyors of the past… |
